Manipulon Island Gets New Boats, Chapel Roof Courtesy of Copylandia

March 14, 2014 – Life just got a little better for the residents of Manipulon Island.

This tiny island off the coast of Iloilo was ravaged late last year by typhoon Yolanda. Around 90% of the fishing boats were swept away by the storm, impacting the lives of 90 families who depend largely upon fishing for their livelihood. The super typhoon also took a toll on the island’s modest buildings, including the local chapel whose roof was blown away by the high winds.

Within a few weeks, a contingent of Copylandia employees and volunteers from the international NGO Art of Living Foundation Philippines landed in Yolanda to conduct trauma relief sessions. Before returning to Manila, the executive management of Copylandia pledged to help Manipulon rebuild its community chapel and fishing industry.

Last February 25, we made good on our promise. Copylandia Office Systems Corporation has delivered the first of 20 boats to replace the island’s decimated fishing fleet. One of the larger boats, the Manipulon Service, is now being used to ferry children to school on the mainland.

The funds donated by Copylandia also enabled the rebuilding of the chapel. It now boasts a new roof, sheltering churchgoers from the tropical heat and allowing masses to resume normally.

The projects were initiated by our President, Feliciano Juarez Jr., and our Executive Vice President, Bernadette Guico-Juarez, with sponsorship from our partner, Riso Kagaku Corporation of Japan. The projects were done in coordination with Mr. Ben Belasoto, community organizer for the people of Manipulon.
